Litchfield Shire Council is is comprised of:
- the presiding member, who is elected as a representative from the whole of the shire (that is, there is a separate election for this position). The presiding member of Litchfield Shire Council is called the President;
- and 4 members – 1 member representing each of the shires four wards.
The role of the President is to:
- chair all ordinary meetings of the council;
- act as the principal spokesperson of the council (unless the council determines otherwise);
- carry out the civic and ceremonial duties of the office of presiding member; and
- to exercise the other functions of the council as the council determines from time to time.
The role of a member of a council is to:
- represent the interests of the ratepayers and residents of the whole council area;
- provide community leadership and guidance; and
- facilitate communication between the community and the council.
Members of council are part of an incorporated body which has the responsibility for carrying out the duties and exercising the powers conferred on the council by the Local Government Act and other relevant Northern Territory legislation.
